If you've stopped on the M6, do this first
- Pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency refuge area if you can, as far left as possible, wheels turned to the left.
- Hazard lights on. At night or in poor visibility, sidelights too.
- Leave by the passenger-side doors and get behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one.
- Do not attempt a repair, and do not put out a warning triangle on a motorway.
- If you cannot get off the running lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
Recovery on the M6
The M6 is the busiest stretch of motorway we cover, and the section through the West Midlands \u2014 Spaghetti Junction at J6, the climb past Walsall, the Toll split at J11a \u2014 generates more call-outs than any other road in the region.
