If you've stopped on the M5, do this first
- Pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency refuge area if you can, as far left as possible, wheels turned to the left.
- Hazard lights on. At night or in poor visibility, sidelights too.
- Leave by the passenger-side doors and get behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one.
- Do not attempt a repair, and do not put out a warning triangle on a motorway.
- If you cannot get off the running lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
Recovery on the M5
The M5 carries traffic south out of Birmingham towards Worcester and the South West, and the northern junctions \u2014 J1 at West Bromwich down through Halesowen and Bromsgrove \u2014 sit squarely inside our coverage.
