If you've stopped on the M42, do this first

  • Pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency refuge area if you can, as far left as possible, wheels turned to the left.
  • Hazard lights on. At night or in poor visibility, sidelights too.
  • Leave by the passenger-side doors and get behind the barrier, up the bank if there is one.
  • Do not attempt a repair, and do not put out a warning triangle on a motorway.
  • If you cannot get off the running lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
